Abstract: We develop new tools for treating solitons in quantum field theory. Our new formalism avoids an ambiguity that has historically led to errors in such calculations and it avoids a nonlinear canonical transformation that has historically made such calculations impractical. We illustrate our new formalism on quantum kinks. We are able to determine not only the masses of quantum solitons, but also, for the first time, the corresponding quantum states and the excitation spectra.
